North Sea Oil Spill Investigation Launched.
6th September 2011
An investigation has been launched by Government Officials, looking into the cause of last month's leak from the Alpha Gannet platform in the North Sea.
Shell confirmed that their divers closed a faulty release valve on Friday, no further oil had been released. However, the pipeline - which has been secured to the seabed with 26 concrete "mattresses" - could still contain as much as 660 tonnes of oil, three times more than the nearly 220 tonnes that has already leaked.
Shell have taken further measures to ensure that there is no more Leakage, but are relying heavily on surface spill response equipment to deal with any other eventualities, should they arise.
